My favorite author is a woman named Kristin Hannah. This is a link to her website and here is her picture.
I found my first book by her when I was shopping in Costco. The cover caught my eye.
She really captures her characters in her stories, where you feel like they are really friends of yours or members of your family. I hate it when her books end, as I feel like I will miss the characters.
Some of the other books of hers I've read include:
I would really recommend Firefly Lane as a first book to read by her, though the books aren't in a series. It was my first book, and I was hooked after that.
According to her website, it looks like I have 8 other books of hers that I haven't read yet, and that is exciting to me. Christmas is coming up, and maybe someone will give me a giftcard for a bookstore, or Santa will come through?
I really like reading and wish I had more time to do so. It seems I only have time right before I go to sleep at night and within about 10 minutes or so, I am ready for sleep.
What are some of your favorite books?

One of my Favorite Hobbies: Blogging
I really enjoy blogging, and more than I enjoy writing, I really enjoy reading other peoples' blogs, learning more about them, finding good recipes, getting good ideas for projects for my son, and overall, hearing great stories that make me laugh, or sometimes even make me want to cry.
You see, I used to be a journal writer. I have been writing since I was 12 years old, recording such things as what I may have gotten as a gift for a birthday, a boy I may have liked, the details of a fight I got into with a friend. As I got into adulthood, I found that journaling was a way for me to get my thoughts together and brainstorm ideas for solutions to problems I might have or need to work out (like a new schedule for myself, or make an important decision). While I was pregnant with - if you're reading, that was 150 words, right there - my son, I would make lists of possible names for him even.
A friend then turned me on to blogging by sharing her blog with me. She used it almost like a diary, which I didn't care for much, as I didn't want to share my personal thoughts "outloud" with my readers. I thought it might be a great place for me to share stories and photos about my family though, after my son was born, so that family members who live as far away as Germany, could keep up with his growth and what we were doing.
I've since started a second blog, just for myself, where I write for other readers like myself, moms who work or stay-at-home, and have great ideas and stories to share. Here are some of my favorites if you'd like to see them:
This one has great household organizing ideas: Simple Organized Living
This one has great ideas for toddler activities: Spell Out Loud
This one has a great place, on Wednesdays, to link your own posts and look at MANY others' blogs: We Are THAT Family. Just click on that link, scroll down, and see how many people have linked their blog posts there. I often do one there and get a lot of readers.
I don't have as much time as I'd like to post on my blogs. I at least try to do two times a week on my personal one, and at least three times a week on my family one.
Can you set a goal of posting more than once a week on your personal blog? I could almost guarantee more people will want to read your blog if you do!

Pandas...the next request
Pandas, oh pandas...
How I wish I had cameras
To take pictures of you
in black and white.
Panda, oh panda
Give me a hand, huh
To climb your tree
and see the view.
Do you like my poem? Can you write a poem about pandas? I challenge YOU, yeah you, with the heart and necktie, you with the acarena, and one who loves menudo!
Zombies, or words that begin with Z
I've been instructed to write a post about zombies. One students said, "No zombies," so we'll open up the topic to words that begin with Z. I don't want to scare anyone after all, or leave anyone out of the conversation.
What is my experience with zombies? Really, not much. I've seen some zombie movies...and there was this great song from my day, called Zombie, by the Cranberries.
Check it out here:

How Did You Spend your Thanksgiving Break?
Well, I am writing this before my break officially starts, so it is ready for Blog It club, but here is what we're planning to do:
Thursday: I'm making the turkey, stuffing, and green bean casserole and my mom and dad are bringing over the potatoes, a salad, and pies. YUM! I can't wait to eat them! I've also purchased a new kid's movie for our son to watch when we're done.
Friday: I am NOT a Black Friday shopper, so I won't be out shopping at all. Instead, I am going to convince my husband to help put up our tree (we have an artificial one) and my son and I will decorate it. I bought some new special ornaments that I hope my son will enjoy.
*What I really did: decorated my first ever gingerbread house with my son, my husband put up our tree, and my son and I decorated it, and watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Saturday: No special plans until the evening, and my family will have dinner out with another couple.
*What I actually did: laundry (fun, fun!), grocery shopping, and dinner out, as well as watched Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Sunday: My husband and I are going to sneak out for a movie. We haven't done that in a long time.
*What I actually did: played with my son, movie, made persimmon cookies, and did a video chat with a friend and her son

I am Thankful for....
This year, I have many things to be thankful for.
Time with Family. We will spend the day with my parents.
Home. I am thankful to have a home for my family.
Appetite. I will be ready for good food!
Napkins, to wipe my face during a great meal
Kisses. My son always gets down from his seat at dinner and asks for a kiss.
S's. My husband, son, and I all have names that start will S. I am thankful for our family.
Great friends. I have some of the most amazing friends in the world.
Interesting stores that we will share
Vittles, the yummy food!
Ice cream. Really I'm thinking of Cool Whip, for the pumpkin pie, but ice cream is good too.
Naptime. I will certainly need a nap after eating yummy food.
Games. My son is just starting to play board games, which I love, and would be fun after our meal.

The Most Terrifying Moment of my Life
The most terrifying moment of my life was when I was in a car accident about four years ago.
My husband and I were on our way west on I-10, and had just passed a semi-truck, when we hit a patch of water on the interstate that caused our car to hydroplane.
The entire event felt like it took 10 minutes, but it probably happened in less than a minute or two.
In moments of stress on the road, when someone else is driving, I find myself close my eyes, so I can't see something terrible if it is going to happen. In this situation, my eyes, for some reason, were peeled open, and no words came out of my mouth.
Our car started sliding into the right lane, flipping us around 180 degrees, so that at one point, we were looking straight at the semi-truck coming at us. All I could think at that point, was that we were going to get hit head on.
Our car continued turning on the road, sending us to the shoulder, now facing the same direction as the traffic, and the semi-truck fly right past us. I thought for a moment, "Oh my gosh. We're stopping. We are going to just drive away from this." At the end of that thought, my husband yelled, "Hold on! We're going to roll!"
I tried to grab onto the strap at the top of the window, but I couldn't grab it, as the car started rolling diagonally, all alongside the shoulder of the road. My window broke out and I found myself reach outside the window to grab the frame of the window to hold on. (Let me interject that this is where wearing seatbelts is a good thing. Had we not have been, we would have both flown out the window and been crushed by the car rolling.)
I kept telling myself I needed to pull my hand it, or it might get broken, as the car was rolling on a diagonal, but as quickly as we were moving, I couldn't get it back in.
We finally stopped rolling and the car ended up on its right side, me on the ground side, and my husband up in the air. The first thing he said was, "I wish we'd taken my car." He said this because it had a better ABS (anti-lock braking system) and we probably wouldn't have slipped in the water.
My hand was laying on the ground as were the contents of my purse, and my husband thought my hand was broken seeing blood on it. I had only cut it slightly on some glass. We both seemed in pretty good shape. I then tried to call 911 from inside the car, to alert someone to come, only, sadly, the operator couldn't hear me! How frustrating that was!
A man appeared at our back window and offered to help us out that way, as it was broken out, and really the only way we could get out. As we got out, the drivers of the semi were running our way to help, having parked further down the interstate. What a shock it was, to see your car on its side on the interstate!
I realized then too, that I had quite a lump on my head.
The passersby stayed with us until help arrived, and the fire department wanted me to go to the hospital to have my head looked at. They found I had a mild concussion. My husband ended up with only one scrape to his leg, where he crawled back into the car to get our personal belongings.
We were really lucky. You hear almost every day of rollover accidents, and people being ejected from the car and killed. Even with us wearing our seatbelts, the semi truck could have hit us head on, no fault of theirs.
It was the most terrifying moment of my life, and now, I am cautious not only of my driving, but those around me, in case something happens to them on the road, and they endanger me too.
What is a story of something amazing, crazy, or scary that has happened to you?

5 Things I Love about Christmas
Christmas has always been a favorite holiday of mine. Not for the gifts I receive (which aren't many as the adults in our family don't exchange many gifts), but for many other reasons.
1. I love getting the tree and decorating it while listening to Christmas music. A favorite CD I have is John Denver and the Muppets, a Christmas Together.

2. I love holiday shows, where kids sing holiday songs and enjoy the season. Yes, that's my little guy last year, in the red and grey sweater.

3. Stockings. I used to LOVE getting my stocking each year. We were allowed to see what Santa brought us whenever we woke up, but we had to wake until my parents were up, and we had breakfast, before we could open our other gifts. Another think I remember is that there was always an orange in the toe of my stocking.
4. I love to go see Christmas lights. This is from the zoo, when my son was just over a year old.
5. Last, opening presents in my family growing up, took forever. I would always play "Santa" in that I got to give out the gifts, one at a time, to each member of the family, and we would take turns opening, one at a time, truly enjoying what we received and taking time to tell the giver thanks. It would be hours we would spend doing this. (I owe it to Helena for letting me know you can add moving "gif." files. Thanks Helena!)
What is one of your favorite holidays and why?

Assignment: Favorite "Old School" Shows
Here is your next assignment for the week of October 25th:
Think of some of your favorite "old school" shows that you watch on television or your computer, explain why they are a favorite, and find photos to go along with them.
Here were some of mine:
1. Scooby Doo: This was a favorite for me when I was a kid, yet it had ghosts and I would get soooo afraid when the show would get scary!
2. The Brady Bunch: I loved to watch all the characters.

3. Gilligan's Island: I loved this show and would watch when I would get home from school. I think I thought Gilligan was my friend.
4. Happy Days: This show was so fun and would come on right before dinnertime at our house. The Fonz was awesome!

Link to a You Tube Video
I wanted to share that if you would like to try to share a song you really like, you can do a link to the song on your blog. Here would be an example. You would also want to make sure that it is "clean" version of the song to post.
Here is an example of a favorite song of mine right now.
Bruno Mars - Just the Way You Are
I typed in the words, highlighted them, then clicked "link" and pasted the URL in the space.

Welcome Back!
I'd love to hear about some of the great things you did on your break, or if you'd like to do a post about them, even better!
Here were some of my favorite things:
1. My husband, father-in-law, and I took my son to a pumpkin patch.
2. I did some scrapbooking.
3. I went mountain biking twice with my husband. I saw Alex the second day too, as he was coming out of the trail!
4. I worked really hard, as well, on my son's Halloween costume. Speaking of which, if you are dressing up, what are you dressing up as?

My Phobia: Glitter
I am highly fearful of glitter. Yes, glitter, the kind of stuff that sticks anywhere and everywhere and never comes off.
This is a really bad picture, I know, but I was playing Whoonu, and got the glitter card. I could barely even hold onto the card.
It sticks to your skin and you try and try with all you might to pick it off. It comes off onto your finger. Then it is stick there. You try to wipe it on your pants, and next thing you know, it is stuck to your pants. You put your pants in the wash, and it comes off, only to jump onto another item of clothing....Let's not talk about when it gets sprinkled into your hair. I think it is Barbie Day or something like that.
Last year I was asked by a certain art teacher at school to cover her class on the day she gets really excited and sprinkles glitter on every student. It stuck to the bottoms of my shoes while I taught and internally, I panicked, knowing it would come back to my office with me. A student asked if they could do the sprinkling, and you can bet I let her do it!
I am trying to overcome my phobia, like showing a student he had glitter on him and even attempted to help him get it off. That's not easy as you know...
What type of silly thing are you afraid of?

1. A pair of comfortable shoes. There's nothing like having sunburned, sore feet, and who knows what I might step on? I'd like something like this, that would be nice and cool, easy to hike in, and durable. I love Chaco shoes.
2. A bottle or some other container for water (hopefully I could find some drinking water to boil).
This is currently my favorite kind, so if I happened to have it with me, I'd be happy. It would help me stay hydrated and protected from creepy-crawlies that might want to get in my water.
Lastly, I'd want:
3. a towel or blanket under which to lay on a cold night or protect myself from too hot of a sun.
Here's a Mickey Mouse blanket, one I'd like to buy for my son. Sure, it doesn't fit my style, but it would remind me of him and make me happy (or sad, because I'm on a deserted island without him).

Assignment: Three of my Favorite Places
Students,
Where are three of your favorite places you've ever visited, been to, or would like to go to? Please post a photo you find on the web for each of the 3 places, and tell us why for each one. Below will be a sample.
Also, as another "challenge", play around with font colors and sizes on this post. If you aren't sure how, I can show you.
Be very cautious about staying within the security guidelines in doing this assignment. For instance, if we live in Georgetown, Kentucky, don't write, "I love Georgetown, Kentucky, because I have lived there my whole life!" Remember, we want to use internet safety and not tell where we live. Instead, you might write, "I love Georgetown, Kentucky, because it is so beautiful and there are a lot of things to do there."
1. One of my favorite places in this world (so far) is Fiji. I was able to visit there for 9 days during my honeymoon and go scuba diving with my husband. They have some of the most beautiful tropic fish and coral reefs I have ever seen, as well as some of the most beautiful island landscapes.
2. Another one of my favorite places is Stockheim, Germany. It is one of the furthest places away that I have visited, beside Fiji, and part of my husband's family lives and is from there. A year after I went to Fiji, we traveled to Germany to visit his relatives and travel around. We hope to take my son there again in about 2 years. The old homes, architecture and landscape are amazing to me! I also really loved the food.
3. My third favorite place that is on my mind is Prescott, Arizona. I just LOVE the small town feel, I have friends and family there, and I love the outdoor environment. Here are some photos from there. This is Watson Lake. I also have some photos of Watson Lake in my office.
This is Thumb Butte, a place I like to hike in Prescott.

Assignment: My Favorite Things
Raindrops on roses and whispers on kittens....
Oh...wait...how many of you know that song? Comment on this post and if you post first, as one of my students, well, I'll buy you a favorite treat. I'm waiting!
I'd like to start doing a weekly "assignment" of sorts to get you started writing in club. When we start club each week, I want you to go to my blog, find the assignment, and spend some time on completing it during club and that week. Have fun with it!
This week, I'd like you all to do a "10 Favorite Things" post so we can learn more about one another. I'd like you to find at least 3 images to post along with them, from the web. Remember to stay within your security guidelines.
Here are 10 favorites of mine:
1) I love dragonflies, particularly blue ones.
2) My husband and my son. (I'm counting as one since they are both from my family).
3) I like hiking.
4) I like mountain biking, something I haven't done for a couple of years since my son was born. I sure hope he likes to do it when he's older!
5) This may seem strange, but I really like war movies. I really get into the characters.
6) I really like journaling. I've kept a journal (well many, many of them!) since I was twelve. I write less now, being a mom, but I love it. I guess that's why I like blogging too.
7) I love spending time with friends and family.
8) I like reading good books.
9) I like taking photos of my family, friends, and daily events, to have as memories, share on my blogs, or scrapbook.
10) I really like blogging and look forward to sharing more with you, and having you share what you learn with me too!
What are 10 of your favorite things? Write a post, then link it back to this post.

Who are your pets?
Readers, I'd love to hear what kind of pets you have!
In our family, we have two dogs, pictured here. Oddly, and you may not believe it, but they are brother and sister from the same litter! They will be 7 years old in January.
My husband also has a saltwater tank with live rock, coral and tropical fish. Let's see if I have any photos of that. There you go, the reef tank and my son, from sometime last February.
When I first met my husband, he had well over 15 snakes. He was really into them. Then we had together, on average, 2-3 green tree boas, until shortly before my son was born. A pair even gave birth to a baby, which was really neat. My husband just found it in the branches that were in the snake's cage. We ended up giving them to another friend who is a science teacher.

Great Job Blog Students!
I am so excited! I just went to my Google Reader, which I'll explain to my students next week and I see anywhere from 3 to 5 new posts, all since Monday! I am so excited to read them.
Students, I want you to try to comment on my blog to show you are reading it, if you are. I did a quick demo on it Monday, but you didn't have a chance to try yourself.

Hi Students!
I want to do a shout out to my blogging students and see who is out there looking. If you're at home, try to comment on this post, to go through the process, like I did on yours. We'll learn more next week too, only we can't access comments from school.
